Become a Dance Project Intern
The Dance Project is now accepting applications for Summer 2017 and Fall 2017! Summer internships run mid-May through mid-August; Fall internships run mid-August through mid-December. These internships will provide opportunities to work for a non-profit organization and gain insight into the life of arts administration. An ideal intern candidate will be reliable and prompt, with strong verbal and written communication skills, an attention to detail, and an interest in working with a community-minded organization.
Dance Project, Inc. is an organization with three activities: a school, a festival, and a dance company. Working in this atmosphere provides invaluable experience with the multiple facets of an arts career.
Interns typically work 5-10 hours per week, and must have access to own laptop/tablet to work from. Interns may be assigned to work across multiple areas, if skill sets and interests allow; all interns are expected to help with major Dance Project events when available.
Positions available in the following areas:
Assist the school director and assistant school director with class management and school administration. Learn the behind-the-scenes work of running a community dance program. Over the summer, assisting with summer camps is a big part of this position. Skills: Computer-proficient (Microsoft Word and Excel), detail-oriented, independent, good interpersonal communication. Some data entry and filing required. Video and photo editing experience preferred. Available Summer and Fall.
Assist with preparations and performances for the Junior, Teen, and Adult Student Performance companies. Tasks include costume maintenance, publicity, rehearsal and backstage help, and program evaluation. Must be interested in working directly with students between age 7-18, and be comfortable interacting with families and audience members. Experience with videography/photography and costume repair preferred. Attendance at outreach performances expected. Fall only.
Assist in the implementation and documentation of Dance Project’s 4 week summer outreach program. During July, participants learn West African dancing and drumming for 2 hours each day (likely 3-5pm). The last week of the program, the students perform in a series of community concerts around Greensboro. Intern will assist with the planning of the program, including performances, will attend the daily classes, and will document the program through photos and videos. Intern must: have reliable transportation, have experience and/or interest in working with youth ages 5-13, have experience with basic photo/video equipment, and be responsible, friendly, professional and reliable. Video editing experience is preferred. Summer only.
Marketing and Social Media Assistance
Assist Dance Project administrators with implementing overall marketing and social media strategy and maintaining an active online presence across Dance Project’s social media platforms. Must be detail-oriented, creative, computer-savvy, and able to work well independently. Previous experience with all or most of these social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and Google+) required. Preferred skills/experience: Video and photo editing; marketing; graphic design. Available Summer and Fall.
NC Dance Festival Program Assistant
Assist with preparations for the 2017-18 annual NC Dance Festival activities and other program planning. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Assist with planning and outreach for our upcoming performances, provide assistance with artist-related research, assist with volunteer coordination, production details, program evaluation, and other administrative tasks as needed. Must have excellent writing and editing skills, be creative, detail-oriented, and work well independently. Interest in the arts (specifically dance), previous experience with dance/theater production, graphic design software, and social media highly preferred. Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel required. Available Summer and Fall.
Assist with fundraising and development. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: seek in-kind sponsorship and sell program ads for annual and ongoing events, provide assistance with grant research, assist in planning fundraising/development efforts, update and organize development database reports, assist with filing, and other administrative tasks as needed. Must have excellent research skills, be detail-oriented, and work well independently. Interest in fund development sectors, and previous experience or coursework in development/fundraising preferred. Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel required. Available Summer and Fall.
In addition to gaining experience, interns may take free dance classes at our School during the semester they are interning (including half-price master classes), and, with faculty approval, may apply for academic credit.
