November 7th- Van Dyke Performance Space

NCDF Performance for Local Schoolgroups

On November 7, NCDF presents a free performance specifically for local school groups. The concert, featuring four professional choreographers from across NC, has been arranged to present a variety of perspectives on dance, and designed to help young audiences find the awe, humor, curiosity, and inspiration in dance.

The concert is followed by a Q&A session, facilitating interaction between these students and local professional artists, and giving the students tools to watch, think about, and even create their own art.

Jen Guy Metcalf: “The Light we Cannot See” is inspired by the book, “All the Light We Cannot See,” by Anthony Doerr. According to Doerr, the title “is a reference first and foremost to all the light we literally cannot see: that is, the wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum that are beyond the ability of human eyes to detect (radio waves, of course, being the most relevant).

Christa Oliver: “Times of Refreshing” draws inspiration from Scripture and Ayub Ogada’s Kenyan folk song “Kothbiro,” which celebrates the arrival of rain. In many African cultures, rain is regarded as a blessing, symbolizing new life, transformation, fresh beginnings, revival, and the restoration of spirit.

Kylie Venticinque: The dance film “Frayed” reflects choreographer Kylie Venticinque’s experience of suddenly losing her father from a drug overdose — explorations of the unconventional and gritty repercussions grief takes on a person beyond the surface view.
